Former and future European Capitals of Culture

Since the first European Capital of Culture was awarded to Athens in 1985, more than 35 cities have hosted the European Capital of Culture. In the beginning only one city could be Cultural Capital per year, but since 2004 there have been two countries that have had a European Capital of Culture every year.
