The Chinese Are Coming

Presented by Cultural History Museums

The dangerous combination of currents, weather, and people have caused thousands of shipwrecks along the West Coast of Denmark. Using the wrecks as a starting point, we tell fascinating narratives. Each ship represents a specific time and a unique story. One such tale is the wrecking of the Russian ship SS Wanda in 1902.

The ship was known as ‘The Chinamen’s Ship’ because of 15 rescued Chinese sailors. This shipwreck resulted in a spectacular cultural meeting between locals and the exotic newcomers. The exhibition examines the attitudes of the community towards the Chinese and includes impressive objects from ‘The Chinamen’s Ship’ to create a visually stimulating experience and a better understanding of the past.
