NOTHING

An Aarhus 2017 Commission
Presented by Danish National Opera with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden

Acclaimed composer David Bruce and librettist Glyn Maxwell (The Firework Maker’s Daughter) deliver a contemporary Opera full of questioning and tragedy in this ground breaking commission for the Danish National Opera and Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Adapted from the celebrated novella, INTET, by award-winning Danish writer Janne Teller, this compelling drama takes the audience on a journey of soul searching that ends with dark thoughts and gritty consequences.

Set in a provincial school in 1960s Denmark, the story follows young Pierre who climbs into a tree to declare a manifesto of nihilism: ‘Nothing matters’, he tells his classmates. The drama unfolds as they try to convince him otherwise.

This must-see, existential Opera, sung by soloists from the Danish National Opera together with 75 young people and orchestral talents from TalentU, The Royal Academy of Music and the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra was acclaimed and celebrated at its premiere in the prestigious Glyndebourne Opera Festival in Britain. NOTHING makes its Danish debut as part of Aarhus 2017.

This production of 'NOTHING' was originally co-commissioned by Glyndebourne Productions Limited and Royal Opera House Covent Garden Foundation.
