FUTURE FEMINISM: Iconic feminist exhibition

Iconic feminist exhibition and performance series  by Anohni, Kembra Pfahler and Johanna Constantine

FUTURE FEMINISM calls for the emergence of a feminine collective consciousness to save what remains of our world.

For European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017, Anohni, Aarhus 2017 Artist-in-Residence, invites her New York-based collaborators Kembra Pfahler and Johanna Constantine to present their iconic exhibition, FUTURE FEMINISM, comprised of 13 monolithic works. A series of performances, talks, workshops and events hosted by the artists will transpire during the course of the exhibit.

Since its first showing in 2014, aspects of the text from FUTURE FEMINISM have been widely appropriated in popular culture, most notably Tenet #13: "THE FUTURE IS FEMALE," which was subsequently marketed by t-shirt companies and even proclaimed by Hillary Clinton earlier this year. It is within the context of the constellation of ”13 Tenets of Future Feminism" that the radical prescription for change at the heart of this landmark work be accurately assessed.

"Provocations that place a female sensibility at the center of the future survival of all species"

“The performance practice of Anohni has been recognized the world over for its corporeal, visceral delivery of raw, urgent truths and passions. She is also a generous seeker and instigator of collaborative ideas, energies and expressions. For Anohni, truth-seeking is an insistent and porous pursuit in which the energies of others offer a sense of society and a possible set of solutions. Future Feminism is a set of provocations that place a female sensibility and feminine consciousness at the center of the future survival of all species,” says programme director Juliana Engberg, European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017.

"The subjugation of women and the earth is one and the same"

In 2014 a collective of five artists in NYC mounted an exhibition and 13-day performance festival at Hole Gallery in NYC. Having spent 3 years developing their ideas in retreat, Anohni, Kembra Pfahler, Johanna Constantine, Bianca Hunter and Sierra Casady emerged with "13 Tenets of Future Feminism." Drawing from ancient concepts, feminist thought and most pressingly, an urgent sense of the eco-collapse unfolding before us, the directives of FUTURE FEMINISM are a provocation that, at their core, call for the reconstitution of a feminine collective consciousness. This, if radically empowered, might be strong enough to reorganize our behaviors as a species and save what remains of our world.
