Presented by Danish National Opera and Aarhus Symphony Orchestra
Directed by Kasper Holten
World-acclaimed Danish director Kasper Holten transforms Susanne Bier’s filmic masterpiece, Brothers, into a captivating and vivid opera. Brothers is a strong domestic drama about two brothers. The older brother, Michael, has a successful career in the military, and a beautiful wife and daughter. The younger brother, Jamie, lives a life of ease on the wrong side of the law.
When Michael is sent on a UN mission to Afghanistan and returns home after a traumatic period in captivity, the equilibrium between the two brothers changes for good. Composer Daníel Bjarnason’s symphonic sound universe is a spellbinding mixture of old and new, bridging the gap between traditional, classical sound and the 21st century’s vision of what music could be.
Text by Reumert award-winner Kerstin Perski. Scenography and costumes by Steffen Aarfing. Conductor: André de Ridder.

About the Bier Trilogy
Oscar-winning Danish film-maker, Susanne Bier, has built a reputation as one of the world’s outstanding directors through her works that examine the lives of people as they encounter the raw emotion and challenges of living a life separately and together.
In 2017 Bier’s celebrated film trilogy Brothers, Open Hearts and After the Wedding is transformed from screen to stage in three ground breaking theatrical commissions. Bier’s most acclaimed and successful films will be staged in three different genres – as an opera, a dance performance and a musical.
Led by commissioning partner, Musikhuset, the opera Brothers is being produced in cooperation with the Danish National Opera and Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. The dance performance Open Hearts is being produced in cooperation with Marie Brolin-Tani and Black Box Dance Company, and the musical After the Wedding is being produced in cooperation with the Betty Nansen Teatret.
