This will be the topic of debate when European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017 invites people to Aarhus Teater on 21 May. This will be the second of a series of four debates called HYPOTHETICALS, which are being presented by TV anchorman and editor Clement Kjersgaard.

With international and Danish guests present on the stage, Aarhus Teater will be the perfect venue, providing people with the space and time to explore thoughts in detail and to ask the big questions. There will be intermissions for refreshments, including an evening intermission, when Café Hack will serve dinner on a long table – secondary school style! (NB: dinner is not included in the price, but can be purchased for DKK 245).

SPEAKERS (the list will be updated on an ongoing basis)

Jan-Werner Müller: German professor in populism and author of the highly-topical and acclaimed book ‘Hvad er populisme?’ (What is populism?) Jan-Werner Müller is recognised as one of our time’s intellectual heavyweights.

Guy Standing: Professor in economics and author of the acclaimed books‘The Precariat: The New Dangerous Class’ (2015) and ‘The Corruption of Capitalism: Why Rentiers Thrive and Work Does Not Pay’ (2016). One of the pioneers behind and advocate for basic income for citizens.

Svend Brinkmann: Professor in psychology and author of the books ‘Stå fast - et opgør med tidens udviklingstvang’ (Stand firm - a counterreaction against the time’s forced development) (2014) and ‘Ståsteder’(Standpoints) (2016). Brinkmann’s writing has looked at the issue of why people in modern society experience loss of meaning in their lives.

Emma Holten: Debater, activist, editor and one of the time’s young and noteworthy feminist voices.

Leny Malacinski: A journalist working for the Danish weekly broadsheet newspaper Weekendavisen, and author of the debate book ‘Den dag, jeg opdagede, jeg var undertrykt’ (The day I discovered I was one of the suppressed). A book that directly and wittily heavily criticises equal rights feminism.

Steffen Rasmussen:Social Entrepreneur, philosopher and founder and daily leader of ‘Fundamentet’ (The Foundation), which rethinks social work for vulnerable citizens.

Katja Iversen:President of ‘Women Deliver’, which is recognised as one of the world’s leading organisations working for the health and rights of girls and women.

Tinna C. Nielsen: Anthropologist and founder of the non-profit organisation 'Move The Elephant For Inclusiveness'. In 2015, she was proclaimed as a Young Global Leader at The World Economic Forum. Former Head of Diversity, Inclusion & Collaboration at Arla.

Geeti Amiri:Debater who focuses on the fight for the rights of immigrant women, author of the autobiographical book ‘Glansbilleder’(Scraps) and radio host for the program ‘Geetisc råd’ (Geetish Advice), which is broadcast on Danish national radio channel P1.

Knud Romer: Author, debater and radio host for the programme Radio24syv programmet RomerRiget 

Carsten Jensen: Professor in Political Science, Aarhus University. Area of research covers the Welfare State. Has been named lecturer of the year several times.
 
Mehdi Mozaffari: Professor in Political Science, Aarhus University, doing research in globalisation, islamism and radicalisation. 

THEME FOR THE DAY 
In countries all over the world – including Denmark – people are discussing what can and must hold society together. At the same time, there is increasing scepticism towards politicians, democracy, globalisation, market forces, technology, etc. – apparently, everything is up for debate. So who is responsible for ensuring our happiness? Ourselves or the community in either a new or an old version? We take a global look at this, but also zoom in on things that are very close and local.

PROGRAMME FOR THE DAY

During eight hours, we will hear speakers respond briefly to the question, which will then be opened up for debate – among the 700 people in the audience and among the people on the stage. Programme schedule:
